Friday Sharing w/You

The below question was posted on the Environmental Health & Safety Professionals (50,000 members+) network of Linkedin.

“What influence does HSEMS have on a company’s financial position/ Bottom line?”

And on the above question, someone commented:

“The first rule of business is survival and the guiding principle is not the maximisation of profit but the reduction is not elimination of loss”.

I posted my comment:

The above is just a motherhood statement and is useless.
Why are we against making more money? To me, the 1st rule in business is to Make More Money (3Ms) the guiding principle is Mindfulness. All CEOs reporting to Wall Street love this 3Ms. Period!

When I am in the corporate world I preaches making more money to all senior management and the whole organisation and safety is held as a value to all employees. At the end of the year, we made tons of money with zero accident.

Today, I retired from the corporate world and preaches a new term ‘less with less” not the usual “do more with less”. I am currently managing my own safety & quality consultancy business. My approach have never change. The first 90 seconds of my selling preach to my clients is – I am here to help you Make More Money, safety will be built into your operating system and held as a value by all employees.

We didn’t create our organisation just for the sake of their existence. Thus, every actions taken by any part of the organisation should be judged by its impact on the overall purposes. Regardless of the functions of HSE, HR, Engineering, Production or Marketing.

This immediately implies that before we can deal with any improvement of any section of a system, we must first define the system’s global goals and the measurements that will enable us to judge the impact of any subsystem and any local decision on these global goals.

Let’s remember that in our reality, any system has very few constraints and at the same time any system in reality must have at least one constraint.

Rarely do I see market constraint, human resources constraint, production bottleneck constraint, vendor constraint or HSEMS Constraint What I see is marketing policy constraints, production policy constraint human resource policy constraint, HSEMS policy constraint or purchasing policy constraints. And in all cases the policies were very logical at the time they were instituted. Their original reasons have since been long gone but the old polices still remain with us.

Today, the people who makes the most money are auditors because you ‘install’ a HSEMS for them to make money. Many organisations today still are just installing a system for the sake of the system. That’s the reason why auditor loves you. Organisation hardly ‘implements’ a system. If organisation did implements a system, I believe auditing will be a sunset business. One more thing, Certification create Complacency, that’s why again you need audtiors!!!

Let’s come back to the question:

“What influence does HSEMS have on a company’s financial position/Bottom line?”

The answer from me is “Zero”. HSEMS is just another system side by side with HR, Engineering, production QA/QC, etc. There are tons of polices and procedures in the internet in any organisation, and I know that hardly any employees visited any of these sites to read & learn from it.! – Don’t cheat yourself, who goes to your HSE site to read your HSEMS.

Do not get me wrong. I am supportive of HSEMS but a better way is to build a safety culture through ‘principle & value base” and the best way to do it is by storytelling.

“We have found stories to be so effective, they’ve replaced our policy manual. Stories create an environment where people are receptive to change and new ideas” – David Armstrong, Managing by Storying Around.
Let’s put HSEMS aside and have some fun. “Ignite Fun safety leadership”. I hardly see any discussion on ‘Fun, Safety and You (FSY). For me, all I wanna is to have some fun. I got a feeling that I am not the only one, you too wanna it but because your title is a ‘Safety Professional’ so your ‘Self-Image’ and your ‘Ideal-Self’ is Conflicting, Confusing & Contradictory …..am I right?

On Safety, a very good country you can learn from is Singapore. There is hardly any policeman on the street because it is 24/7 safe (never go to Paris – it is suck!!!) I do know most ministers in the government bodies go through a story-telling session and these 2 years Singapore government and their citizens are doing dialogue and conversation. These are all principle and value culture creation.
A better way to create a safety culture is to implement a “POOI” – a Process Of Ongoing Improvement” – don’t take these 4 words lightly. Do what the Chinese did – get a piece of 3×3 paper. Write these 4 words on it then put it into a cup, burn the paper until it becomes ashes and add water, stir it and drink it and yell loudly ‘Yam-sheng’ (bottoms-up). That is implementation not installation.

Have you heard the story about our living organs? The Heart said he is the most important part as it pumps the blood, the lungs claimed they are the most important as they bring in oxygen to move. The liver makes his claim, nolliver, no liveand the brain joins in. The mouth, the ears and the eyes also claimed their importance. But, do you know who is “The” most important part of our organs? It starts with an “A” – The moral of the story, we talk so much about HSEMS, etc. do you know who is the most important system in any organisation that can shut you up and put a constraint on you?

We block our effectiveness not because we have questions but because we think we have the answers.

飲水 思 源 – When you drink water, remember the source
To forget one’s ancestor’s is to be a brook without a source, a tree without root
Make happy those who are near, and those who are far will come

To talk much and arrive nowhere is the same as climbing a tree to catch a fish”
One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade
