What’s a simple activity that consistently makes you happier?
Walking, I challenge you to walk for thirty minutes and you will feel Fresher, Superb & Younique happier. It’s the cheapest, healthiest exercises on earth. Nowadays, I walk up and down 45 stories. Walk the walk, Daniel Walker

When I first taught 5Ss Good Housekeeping Practices in Malaysia Pasir Gudang back in 1996, during the first morning tea-break, one naughty student of mine wrote this on the white board – Saya Suka Simpan Sampah Sarap. I was amazed thinking that they are fast learners and able to translate my English version of 5Ss – Sort, Sweep, Systemize, Sustain, Self-discipline into Bahasa Melayu. Not realizing that the 5Ss in Bahasa Malaysia meant ‘I like to keep rubbish’! Thank you for bringing the teachings to the mosque.

My friend from Indonesia have a different version in Bahasa Indonesia; Saya Suka Sekali Simpan Sampah (I like to keep rubbish).

We Know why we don’t have problems with Quality
It takes courage to admit that you have been doing something wrong to admit that you have something to learn that there is a better way … Dr Deming.

Let’s take a few steps back to refresh our minds on Dr. Deming’s Fourteen Points on Total Quality. As a statistician, Dr. Deming’s lifelong mission has been to seek sources of improvement. Given the failure of statistical methods, he concluded that organization needs bedrock of philosophy of management.

1. Create constancy of purpose for improvement of products and services.
2. Adopt the new philosophy.
3. Cease dependence on mass inspections.
4. End the practices of awarding business on price tag alone.
5. Improve constantly and forever the system of productions and services.
6. Institute trainings.
7. Institute leadership.
8. Drive out fear.
9. Break down barriers between staff areas.
10. Eliminate slogans.
11. Eliminate numerical quotas.
12. Remove barriers to pride of workmanship.
13. Institute a vigorous program of education and retaining.
14. Take action to accomplish the transformation.

WHY Total Quality is so hard to achieve?

Maybe your organization has these diseases
1. Lack of constant purposes.
2. Emphasis on short-term profits.
3. Evaluation of performances, merit ratings, or annual reviews of performances.
4. Mobility of management.
5. Running a company on profit alone.
6. Excessive medical costs.
7. Excessive cost on warranty claims.

In addition to the above listed, the following 3 problems do exist and true as Singapore currently pushing for productivity (Boh-Ta-Boh-Ti) rather than Total Quality.

8. Relying on technologies to solve problems.
9. Seek to follow rather than developing solutions.
10. Relying too much on foreign workers.

The system of Total Quality improvement consists of the fourteen points and removal of the deadly diseases and obstacles.  All the above philosophy and diseases depends on how you respond, when and how are you going to be converting to this line of thinking?

You can’t put TQ initiative into most companies the way they stand today.

You can’t superimpose TQ views of the roles of today’s workers and management. It just won’t works.

You need to think about a NEW unexpected Quality journey about quality, systems, priorities, employees’ relationship and your own job. You cannot value people as bodies and a pair of hands. You must win their minds and hearts. TQ must be the driving force of changes. There is no right or wrong formula and no perfect set of techniques. You have to move through stages, listening, learning and changing as you continue into this Unexpected Quality Journey. It’s hard work, sometimes Frustrating, Silly and Youniquely fun.

All companies are full of Active, Brilliant & Courageous people who would change if they only knew how. So… Drop me an email at daniel@qualipreneur to embark on The NEW Unexpected Quality Journey

No Waiver
You don’t need to receive junk that comes in. You can never produce quality with Junk stuff.

Engage the powerless
Most employees understand very well that as quality improves, so does productivity. They understand fully well that their works are more vital than those of the managers as the acceptance depend on their products and services in the marketplace. Yet, they are powerless to change things.  Employees must felt that they have a stake in the company.

Willing to work hard for Quality
You can send quality out and bring food back.

He who thinks he has to be practical is not going to be here very long. Who knows what is practical?

Total Quality is not a department… It is an organization wide commitment.

Quality must not only exist… it must be the requirement of the customer.

You can send Quality out and bring food Home.

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched… but are felt in the heart.”~ Helen Keller

Friday, See You here… Every Friday

Employees today are regarded as a commodity to be used as needed. If not needed, they are put on the chopping boards.

Today’s managers work long hours and willing to cope with many Frustrated, Silly, Youniquely  puzzled annoyed situations but shy away from the problems of the people that work for them.

Here’s to Your Quality
The work of your Heart
The work of taking time to listen to your customer
The work of taking time to understand the requirement
The work of taking time to stop the process if it does not meet the requirement.
The work of taking time to meet the customer requirement
