Malaysia Boleh ! Kampung’s Spirit (Village Spirit) – still exists in Malaysia

On my way home from Johor, (Wednesday night, Jan 16) I made a careless turn at a narrow single lane road and my car landed into a big drain. At 10:30 p.m. in the dark unfamiliar street in Johor roadside struck me with many worries as we heard too many stories about Singaporeans being robbed, kidnapped or have their cars hijacked etc.
But I took my chances to wave down 2 cars passing by and they really stopped. Then 2 Indian guys alighted from their vehicle walking toward me. They were so friendly and assessed my situation then trying to help me lift up my car. My SUV is too heavy for the 2 guys. And then more cars stopped with more helping hands my car was finally lifted out of the drain. 2 guys in overalls look like they were just on their way home from work went straight to change my front tire with the spare I have. After they are done, I offered them some money for drinks but they kindly declined. I sincerely would like to thank all these guys for helping a ‘sotong’ guy like me. To me, Malaysia Boleh ! Kampung Spirit, Truly Malaysia!

Earlier on the day,(Wednesday, Jan 16) I have knelt and prayed for peace upon everyone in one of the mosques in KL Putra Jaya that is maybe the almighty has blessed me. I was in KL Putra Jaya visiting one of my best friends who like me has also retired from the same MNC Corporate Jungle. Now, he is doing a less stress and relax job as a tour guide in this mosque. I do have a habit that wherever I travel to, I always make it a must to visit either the Churches/Chapels, Temples or Mosques. Besides this grand mosque in KL Putra Jaya, if you have a chance make it must to visit the Sultan mosque in Oman and the big mosque in Abu Dahai which is now open to public. I will pray to any God for peace upon everyone as I believe that all Gods regardless of religions are One Humanity and there are still many good people around us.

I always believe in Giving, Sharing and God will take cares of the rest.

iHOPE - without Hopes & Dreams there can be no progress !!

Hope, as the old cliché says is not a business strategy. Hope is daydreaming of striking big in lottery.

I show you this small winning lottery ticket is not to mislead you into thinking that I am lucky to start a fresh new year by striking lottery or belittle those who are lazy just hoping and not embarking on a course of action in 2013.

In fact, if you embark with me on this Unexpected Quality Journey you will understand that all inspirational leaders use hope as a business strategy.

Quality = Managing Customers & Colleagues

The urge to get out into the world trying to getting more managers to see the Total Quality Culture (TQC) light at the end of the tunnel is extremely strong. But, I am sad to say that TQC is fast becoming as a lost item because even the economy is bad, many companies are still making money and management is naïve about it in believing that TQC can be a Keep-In-View item. The so called internal customers (the employees) are being blamed for what the management is causing on the non-conformances that happened in the processes.

The concept of having external & internal customers has to change. We don’t have internal customer. Consultants always used this meaningless clichés that you have internal & external customers. If you follow the consultants’ advice that you have internal customers then you are unable to sustain a quality culture because internal customer is one of your major constraint and also one of the many root causes that when the time is bad, it is okay to lay off thousands of them. You only have one type of customer that is the external customer. It is the reason you are still in business today.

If you insist that you have internal customers. How will the organization treat these internal customers when the economy is bad? Does the organization put them on chopping block?
The answer is ‘Yes’.

  • Morgan Stanley to cut 1,600 jobs.
  • Banks in the US have been cutting thousands of jobs.
  • Goldman Sachs slashed 700 jobs.
  • Citi Group plan to cut 11,000 jobs
  • Bank of America is in the process to cut 30,000 jobs
  • European banks too have been slashing their headcounts
  • Swiss Bank UBS eliminate 10,000 jobs.

It is just the beginning of the year and this big organization is putting the so-called internal customers on the chopping block…. so sad!!!

I believe business leaders regardless of Big MNCs or SMEs have been struggling with the problems of TQ for years as they are basically focusing on the wrong things. Many of them thought that by pushing productivity (I call it “Boh-Ta-Boh-Te”) using technologies; they can increase their market shares and profits.

I emphasize business leaders to measure their quality health within their organization. Total Quality can be measured in clear financial terms and I can say that the non-conformance of their operation costs in any manufacturing companies can be about 15-25 percent. And the service companies around 30-40 percent. I believe if they can spend a few percentages of their sales in preventive and education on TQ then they can make even more money without spending on huge technology investments. Not forgetting that some technologies are like elephants before it can be implemented, they are already obsolete.

Why spend all the time finding, fixing and fighting when you could prevent the incident in the first place. And not forgetting management itself is the clear cause of all incidents in the company.

Now, I have solutions for Business Leaders

You can achieve Total Quality Culture and make more money for your company. All you have to do is take time to understanding the TQ concepts, teach your employee and keep the pressure on for prevention.

…Let’s kick start the Unexpected Quality Journey and piggy-back creating a Safety Culture  along the way by dropping me an email at

Total Safety Culture

On the Unexpected Quality Journey (UQJ), I intend to piggy-back the “Safety” Culture together. I believe that we need to transform the Safety and Health management from a strict compliance Rules & Regulations based system to a performance management system in which the compliance is an important aspect but not an issue.

Health, Safety & Environment should do more than to keep employers out of trouble with the laws and regulatory ministries.

Total Quality Culture & Total Safety Culture should be the key elements in an organization’s strategy for gaining a competitive advantage in today’s global marketplace.

Value is not just on pricing
Rudeness, incompetence, inconvenience, carelessness, inflexibility, unfairness, lack of concern or caring; these are prices that customers refuse to pay. Total Quality directly affects the value of the organization by increasing its bottom-line and decreasing its hassles in the operation.
The ‘HOW’ of Total Quality is never magic. I have a road map. It is time to for the Unexpected Quality Journey.
