Friday Sharing w/You

Friday, December 28

This is it folks! This is my 2012 Final Friday Sharing with You. I have a little bad habit that I have yet again developed the uncanny inability to communicate in just a few lines. Do I feel “seow” (mad)? No. Do I feel that I need to get my brain check? No. Am I brave or stupid to leave the Corporate Jungle and have zero income for the 12 months? Maybe.

Someone Feedback

After reading FSY posting. I know why FSY is so successful. He has a good mother, a loving wife and 3 children. He is honest and kind-hearted willing to share. He has a life of hardship and rich experience. He is good at Focusing, Sensing & Youniquely comparing things to make a Dent. He is Frugal, Simple & Yummy, calm and ordinary citizen.

It is 4 days before the eve of 2013, let me be the first to wish you a healthy, joyous New Year!

It’s been a fantastic year for me and 2013 is going to be even better with more fun, more traveling avoiding Europe. 2013 is Asia’s cities and our finale will be in New Zealand visiting the Hobbits’ hometown where the Unexpected Quality Journey detouring there.

 A gift for you

Someone said all answers and gifts can be found on the internet so I searched high & low, I found a gift that I hope you will value most.

Meeting of minds

I have been in one Corporate Jungle for thirty-three years and as many of you mentioned the only “Fun, Seow & Younique” person (Seow = mad) in with a lot to write and a long list of FSY. And most people think that I am mad, always disappear on December 2 to face the wall and ask why I was born that day. It is true that the most difficult thing in life is to be borne as a human being. This year, I disappear from Singapore and appear in Amsterdam to celebrate my temporary stay of 56 years.

On Christmas day, I had an outing with three friends of mine who between the four of us have each an average of almost 75% of our time in the quality movement. We sat down over dinner and thereafter had one of many “dialogue” sessions on exchanging notes. As in our previous meetings, there were no set agendas. It was just a session of “meeting of minds”. It was a very stimulating and exhilarating session to sit and just learn and listen from one another. We talked about what we had done in the past, what are some of the current trends and the challenges on the Unexpected Quality Journey ahead. I truly believe that if we are to ignite the passion in our people, we must be able to harness the combination collective curiosity of our employees.

We agreed that the phrase “think out of the box” is an insult to our people. In 2013, please don’t force people to think out of the box. You spent so much resources (times & $$$) interviewing, hiring, and training your people and you put them in a box. What a joke……..yeeha

Engaged The Powerless (ETP) If the SMRT bus strike is not a good example, then the Arab Spring of 2011 in Egypt should be a good one, peaceful demonstrations, armed with no tanks and weapons, just cellphone, cameras, using social media channels, like Facebook & Twitter to organize their protests and transmit their stories to the whole world. The powerless want things they wanted, justice, dignity and freedom.

Too big to fail logic is never too big to fail. Command & control management is gone and also there is limitation of carrot & sticks rewards system. And you can’t write more rules & regulations to get behaviour you want for every situation. Situation-Behaviour, Behavioral-Based Safety all these will be in the cloud.

The source of power shifted to the powerless, it is up to you to choose how you connect and collaborate with them using this F-M-C ways.
Forcefully – My way or highway
Motivation – If you get it done, you will get bigger bonus.
Convincing – Shared beliefs & Sustainable values, Principled-behaviour …We explore further in 2013.

Which word is not found in the dictionary? I understand that language is important because it shape our thinking. But one word that is yet to be in the dictionary can excel our behaviour.

If you learn nothing else from reading all my Friday FSY postings, it is okay. Just remember this from Confucius’ thought ” …is that law control the lesser man, but right conduct controls the greater man”

Principled-Based Safety

This week, I got a chance to visit a manufacturing facility. Although, I didn’t get the chance to tour the whole facility but the visit to the ‘induction room’ and the Plant’s toilet made me aware where the safety culture in the company is heading.

I was left alone with a lady security guard who took my IC to enter into their system as well as have my pictures taken which I don’t know for what purposes. She later told me to watch a video that again I am not sure for what purpose so I asked her can I skip the video. She said okay then guided me into the lift and brought me to the reception.

Visiting the toilet tells me the tale of the safety culture of the company. For those who heard my toilet story, you know where your safety culture stands. In short, if the toilet is dirty the people in that organization is dirty. So after reading the above… I believe the next question is “We need to improve our safety culture.” If you are frustrated because your current method of keeping the toilet clean is not working and you murmur the same comment “Why don’t people use more common sense?” or, “keeping the toilet clean is only common sense!”

Let’s face it, humans don’t know what they don’t know. We only know what we know, so how do your employees know that the toilet must be kept clean, after all it is the job of the cleaner’s right? No matter how much you want your employees to do, they do not have the ability to just know about anything, including keeping the toilet clean.

Advocating for safety is no longer the special responsibility of HSE professionals. It is now a part of everyone’s job description. Everyone now must increase Safety Excellence and Innovate Safety. And by the way don’t blame the HSE professionals even they themselves don’t know where they are heading. And also how can you make a wave of safety excellence if only a handful of 10, or so people entrusted to lead this Safety Excellence Journey.

Let us not rely on common sense that doesn’t exists. In a “Principled-Based Safety Culture” I know what people know and do because I have engaged them in the process of creating safety culture based on principles and values. So how do you go about sustaining the “Principled based safety culture” at your workplace? Common sense - Engage me. drop me an email @

If you have a banana and I also have a banana when we exchanged these bananas, then you and I will each still have one banana. But if you have an idea and I have an idea when we exchanged these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” For sustainable safety, we must be willing to learn together and share our newly discovered ideas.

The last month of the year – Time to Recap.

As the year draws to an end many of its uncertainties are now behind us. The apocalypse spoof that the world will end on Dec 21 under the Mayan calendar didn’t happen. The economy is growing. The Malaysia Johor Iskandar Region development, 3 times the size of Singapore remain a good bet for Singaporeans to invest. I didn’t miss any Friday  of my FSY sharing with You. I took the risk of having zero income for a year & traveling around the world with my family  – The Europe break-up seems less likely. The Chinese economy has avoided a hard-landing. As you can see 95% of your worries for 2012 has never happens, so is it time to put the uncertainties of 2012 in the back burner and remember Always be FSY – Friendly, Strongly & Youthful

Why they call forest rain forest? ‘Sotong/Stupid You’ Because it rain-ma!!!
When you are in the forest, the trees don’t like you. They watch you. Someone said “Don’t stray too far from where you are Familiar, Safe & Youniquely comfortable. Stay on the path and all will be well. Better leave the known unknown than to risk coming face-to-face with the tree. But of course, if you are to grow and mature you have to face the trees and leave your comfort-Zone (Corporate Forest). Like I did. The Unexpected Quality Journey. Mission 56-65

Provoking thought for 2013
You probably heard the saying, “Money can’t buy love, happiness, etc.” I heard it many time. …and it was usually from people who didn’t have much money! It is true and I agreed that money can’t guarantees love & happiness, but I know money helps. Because money can buy you the freedom to live life 100% on your own terms not your boss’ terms. And that is happiness, what else you want in life.
I am not setting any goal or resolution for 2013. But, if you want to set a goal for 2013, here’s one for you “Make work optional, work because you choose to, not because you have to.”

If I going to have a goal – my goal is only one word – HOPE.
