Today Sharing:

I wonder who kicked the cat.

One day a very important businessman was preparing for a very important meeting.  All of a sudden he noticed that he had not completed the report he needed for his presentation. He barked at his secretary. “Finish this up and I need it now”.

The secretary did her best to complete the unfinished project before the boss raced out of the door to his appointment. A couple hours later he came back to the office with a defeated look on his face and a worse attitude. “Can’t you do anything right” He snarled, “We didn’t get the contract, so don’t even think about getting a raise.”

The secretary held back her anger, frustration and disappointment and kept it bottled up until the end of the day. When she arrived home later that night she found her son had left all his toy soldiers all over the kitchen. In her emotional pain that she had carried home from work she exploded without even saying hello. “Get your toys out of the kitchen. I have told you a thousand times, don’t play in the kitchen. Clean up the mess and stay outside until I call you for dinner.”

The child, a little bit bewildered, scooped up his toys, tossed them into the toy box, shuffled sadly out the door. He sat on the back porch pouting and mumbling to himself. “Mom doesn’t love me.” Just a he was feeling his worst, the cat walked by. The boy, without even thinking, gave the cat a swift kick in the backside and said. “Stupid cat.” Needless to say the cat looked up with an expression on his face that said. “What the heck did I do.”

What caused the cat to get kick? The boss being unprepared for his presentation and losing the contract of course.

The moral of the story is you never know what’s causing the cat to get kicked.  How someone is responding to you may have nothing to do with you. When you just take the surface attitudes and energy of what someone is projecting, you will probably get yanked into their personal drama.

The next time someone is treating you with less respect than you think you deserve, remember to ask yourself. “I wonder who kicked the cat.”

Think Things Through:

When you notice something or someone today that creates an uncomfortable, unpleasant or even painful experience for you. Take time to experience it fully. Put your full attention on them or it and become more of an observer. Be interested in what is actually going on rather than what you are feeling. It’s not how often you get off track that impacts your life. It’s how fast you notice you are off track and what you learn that determines where you end up.

With gratitude
