Another Friday another set of questions for Twenty-16 that matters.


  • Is it critical that an organization be (F)lexible, (S)trong and (Y)ounique?
  • What is the inflexibility that makes your work processes hassles?
  • Is it critical that company to revisit the operational processes because it might have Quality products but bad processes?
  • What will you change here?
  • Is it critical for your companies to become more networked and less vertically integrated?
  • Who are you connecting or networking?
  • Is it critical to operate as a global, regional or local?
  • What will the change look like?
  • Is it critical to speed up your company’s processes?
  • Who are you trying to change?
  • Is it critical for your organization to become more innovative and entrepreneurial?
  • What do you need to change to become more innovative and entrepreneurial?
  • Is it critical for the leader to create a clear sense of vision and its accompanying culture?
  • What are you doing that people believe you are aligned with the leader vision?
  • Is it critical to organize the company around the employee, not the boss?
  • What are you afraid of?
  • Is it critical to create a Younique balance of older workers and the millennials?
  • Would you miss your work if the coming Friday is your last workday?
  • Is it critical that the corporation is responsible for society and not just the shareholders?
  • What does your corporation stand for?
  • What contribution are you making in the area of social responsibility?

Many of these questions are old and they have been long debated. But the clash today between business interests is narrowly interpreted and the demands of society have intensified.  The question that’s difficult to answer deserves more thought. Any answers that are confusing or complex are most likely a symptom of something important.
Try to answer the above questions, any new answers or ideas will not necessarily drive the old out. Obviously attending to profits will remain critical to every corporation. A business has to make a profit and if it fails to do so, nothing else really matters, because you and the corporation will disappear. But at the same time, a company that pursues only profit at the expenses of everything else will also disappear… Wait a minute… you left only with one choice, Make Money, and Love Safety.

Business is going to be stressful, risky and uncertain, possibly even more in 2016. The drive to innovate more and to do everything faster, better and cheaper is bound to be stressful. Change is always stressful. As of today, many of my friends and ex-colleagues in the oil and gas industries are taking an early retirement voluntarily or otherwise. The lack of job security and an assured future are stressful. Those looking for comfort in 2016 won’t find it.
