The Straits Time published an article on OBS set to be rugged new melting pot

My ex-company is the first MNC (FMC Technologies) to send adults for the 5 days OBS team bonding. For many years, we sent one or two batches of participants selected from all the Asia Pacific/Middle East regional business units (I think we stop at batch 14) until someone who took over the training and told me that there is no ROI and she cancelled it. That’s sad.

Interestingly she asked me what is the objectives I told her I have 3 – “FUN” for




The intangible ROI is so huge that we can’t measure it with tangible ROI. To me, the intangible ROI is:

  • When we Make Money; Love safety, we have zero lost work days for many years
  • When there is no infighting between managers, we have Quality Work; Quality Life.
  • When we have Quality Certainty, the monthly shipment is 95% on each line items,

Who say there is no ROI… !!! 

Many people forget that fun and joy is the new productivity (Boh-Ta-Boh Ti). By the way, I dislike measuring productivity because in business reality it’s useless, that why I coined it “Boh-Ta-Boh Ti” (messy).

Interestingly, we didn’t customise the 5 days programme, we went along with the student programme. At the end of each day, we included a session of our own debriefing. The participants needed to link it back to the company Vision, Mission, Value and very importantly the Quality policy and principles.

OBS should not be merely targeting students. They should explore the adults demographic, which is a very big market. I do understand why the adult market didn’t pick up; it is because of the 5 days. Companies wanted to do it 3 days, even cut to 2 days, but any shorter version of a strong team bonding building programme will not capture the 3 objectives of FUN.
