FSY Week 37 - Keep CoolHey Hey!

It’s a great day today!

Have a nice day, today is Friday, – it’s a win, win day for everyone

Have a nice day, tomorrow – You win some; you lose some

Have a nice day, on Sunday, rest well.

Have a nice day, come Monday, everything back to business as usual.

Say please,

Say Thank you &

Be kind

Quick Quotable

When we speak of Make Money & Love Safety, it is important for you to know that this is not some weird cryptic activity, as our popular safety culture might have it. It does not involve screaming to be known that safety is first, or some kind of safety devotee, safety mystic, or western teaching philosopher. Make Money or Love Safety  is simply about being safe at your workplace and make money to buy butter & bread and knowing something about who that is for – your family.~ FSYQualipreneur

Today Sharing,

A beginner’s mind

I have been working in the Multi-National Corporate world for over 33 years. During that time, I had worked with many different managers and began to notice their repeatable behavioral patterns among them.

Managers tend to come up with predictable systems. The new manager will often land his/her first job as an assistant manager within the same department or from a different business unit they work with previously. After a few years, the assistant manager will be promoted to a manager where he/she tends to replicate the same processes, following similar practices in an identical fashion as his/her predecessor they learned from. Thus, having the Monkeys See, Monkeys Do mentality.

This monkey sees monkey does mentality tends to repeat the same behavior we are exposed to in almost everything we learn in life. Your religious beliefs are mostly the result of the system you are raised in. Majority shows that those raised in Buddhist families tend to lean toward Buddhism; Catholic families tend to be Catholics; Muslim families tend to be Muslims; Hindus families tend to lean to Hinduism etc…

Interestingly, I always tell people that “It is the father that finds the husband for his daughter.” Yes, I understand that we are no longer living in the olden days custom of age and you may disagree with me on this topic. My simple answer is that your parents political attitudes tend to shape your children political attitudes. The ways we approach our daily work and lives are largely due to the system we are trained along the journeys of our lives. At some point, we all learned to think from someone else’s even those who were dead 100 years or maybe thousand years ago! Religious teachings and the business management systems and philosophies have not changed much since then. That’s how religions and management knowledge is passed down.

In every workshop I facilitated,  I always begin the session with the half full, half empty glass of water analogy to emphasize “The Beginner’s Mind” allowing the participants to understand that our knowledge cannot be half full or half empty. To learn, we have to empty the glass of letting go our preconceptions, unconscious bias and having an attitude of openness when learning the quality and safety subject that has been taught in my workshops.

As I have been brought up in a Buddhist family, I learned in my earlier day about the “mindfulness” and “beginner’s mind”. When you are a true beginner, your mind is empty and open. You’re willing to learn and do not have the unconscious bias when considering all the information that you receive.  As you develop knowledge and expertise, your mind naturally becomes more expert and you built a “don’t teach an old dog new tricks” mentality and you don’t want new information, you only want validating information.

There is a danger that you become an expert mind. You tend to block the information that disagrees with your learned experiences and created an unconscious bias on new information that is currently shared with you. We think we are learning but in reality, we are not! We are actually waiting till we hear that something matches up with our current philosophy or learned experiences, then cherry-picking information to justify our current behaviors and beliefs.

Here are 3 questions for your weekend thinking:

  • Do you think sometimes the word ‘Safety First’ gets so abused and overstated that it becomes the ‘killjoy’ word? Do you agree or disagree and why?
  • Do you think Zero Harm or Zero Destination is to justify organizational and political compliance when it has nothing to do with Health, Safety & Environment or working safely in the workplace?
  • How about going on a Plant or Facility tour; a management safety walkabout or a safety conversation chit-chat session to learn how your employees manage their workplace safety and risk trying not to use the word ‘safety’. See if you can do it?

Think through these questions with a beginner’s mind.  Don’t become a slave to your old beliefs without even realizing it.

You have been adopting a philosophy or strategy based on what you have been exposed to without knowing if it’s the optimal way to do the thing. So begin with a  beginner’s mind where there are many possibilities but in the expert’s there are few.

Everyone loves quality 2013-Dec-29

Friday - I Love Quality

My FSY’s sharing is unscientifically and some are contributed by wife & children, friends, acquaintances. I write and share things that matter to me. I understand that everyone have their own opinions, views, & thoughts. There are no right or wrong answers. Nothing is true or untrue, most facts and data can be twisted to your favour.

To the authors, contributors and original sources, my thanks and where appropriate my apologies if I forget to quote your names.

Friday - if you keep reading

I understand that everyone’s attention span is very short and if you read till here, I would like to thank you for staying with me till the end. It might be rubbishes to some people, but I do know that there are some gems hidden to be picked in all rubbishes… Hope you have picked one or 2 gems?

On behalf of myself, me and I, we wish you, your family and loved ones a Fun, Safe, & Youniquely happy and blessed days ahead

LOVE 24/7

Someone said we have 2 choices everyday LOVE or FEAR, I chose LOVE. If you are holding my 3rd workshop book, I have used the word “LOVE” to talk about Leadership on page 14 – “Leaders Stay in LOVE”.

When you tell your friends and family (and/or me – thank you) that you love us – do you take the extra few seconds to become mindful?

Do you ever take a moment to stop and let that really sink in? LOVE.
