Quick Quotable

Do you notice for the first time in history there are 4 generations in your workplace, each with its own definition of work and career expectations? With the rise of the Millennials, technology, and social media, it has become increasingly difficult to work in your noisy, 24/7 connected culture. How do you get along with team-bonding and relational equity that might come across as awkward with the 4 generations?

Today Sharing

I posted the below question couple weeks ago. Why do most restaurants use an unhealthy amount of salt? I believe they used at least 3 to 5 times more than my wife a home cook might use.

Here my sharing.

Salt is a cheap and reliable way to persuade people that the food is tasty. Over times, it might make you sick with high salt intake causing too much calcium to be excreted by the kidneys into the urine leading to a build-up of calcium eventually kidney stones occur that can be very painful and in some cases can lead to other kidney diseases. Also, not forgetting that it might also cause high blood pressure.

But, in that moment of enjoying the food it amplifies the flavours. Definitely way cheaper than using more ingredients, herbs or other enhancing techniques to flavour the dish. That’s why my wife hardly uses salt as she tends to use more herbs and flavourful ingredients in her cooking techniques. I call it playing.

Salt is a Cheap thrill, Shortcut and make people lazy. If you cook with the unhealthy level of salt in the long run, nothing will taste salty after a while. And so the lazy shortcut becomes more than a habit because it’s not even noticed.

The solution to these salt problems is not to say “Zero” usage.

Within your organization, you have great safety policies, training programs, safety incentives and PPEs. However, you still have incidents and injuries.  You may ask Why? I believe is the choice of word usage. Many safety professionals like to use the word “zero” in their safety program with examples like Zero Harm, Zero Incident  or Zero Destination. We need to go back to the basic principles so that we can learn how to cook a healthy meal again. Just like in your safety program, the basic principle is “Make Money and Love Safety.  So, on salt… I Google for the answer  - There is definitely a consensus among many major health organizations that we should aim for less than 1500 mg of sodium per day, and definitely not more than 2300 mg.

The truth is regardless of the environment, training, and tools that you provide to your employees; you as manager or leader are ultimately the ones who must calculate the risks and decide whether it is acceptable (please don’t lie, they are no such thing as zero, tell the true story). While everyone can be trained on safe work practices, individuals exhibit many differences in how they respond to certain situations depending on their unique experiences, traits, abilities, and attitudes related to safety. They have their own worldview on safety.

The safety story employee tells himself about the workplace safety he works at is primarily influenced by the worldview that the employee had before. He even knows the new safety thing. His safety worldview affects three things – A,B,C

  • Attention, the employee’s worldview determine whether he even bothers to pay attention to your safety programs.
  • Bias – every employee carries around a list of grudges and hopes. When you mention to them that one of your safety initiatives are Zero Harm, Zero Incident, Zero Destination or others safety incentive programs, his predispositions instantly colour all the information that comes in.
  • Choices – Employees care just as much about how something is said and as what is said. They do care about the choice of words and the tone of voice. When your story doesn’t match his expectation incident or accident happens.

The moral of my salt story is that understanding how worldviews interfere or amplify your story you tell is the most overlooked element in your Quality or Safety journey, Don’t be cheap, don’t mentioned safety first, don’t aim for safety culture (there are no such thing as safety culture – only Culture of Organisation Excellence ). Don’t be lazy by taking the shortcut. Tell great stories, when your quality and safety rivers confluence it causes a Culture of Organisation Excellence.

You need salt, so please go ahead and play with salt. If your journey hits the fork, take the most difficult route. Surround yourself with people like my wife or me who uses more herbs  and being playful. Play with more ingredients and please don’t be liars, why, because you believe things that aren’t true.

Together, we can continue to build a better and safer organizational culture that make money and love safety that you and your organization can all be proud of.

Everyone loves quality 2013-Dec-29

Friday - I Love Quality

My FSY’s sharing is unscientifically and some are contributed by wife & children, friends, acquaintances. I write and share things that matter to me. I understand that everyone have their own opinions, views, & thoughts. There are no right or wrong answers. Nothing is true or untrue, most facts and data can be twisted to your favour.

To the authors, contributors and original sources, my thanks and where appropriate my apologies if I forget to quote your names.

Friday - if you keep reading

I understand that everyone’s attention span is very short and if you read till here, I would like to thank you for staying with me till the end. It might be rubbishes to some people, but I do know that there are some gems hidden to be picked in all rubbishes… Hope you have picked one or 2 gems?

On behalf of myself, me and I, we wish you, your family and loved ones a Fun, Safe, & Youniquely happy and blessed days ahead

LOVE 24/7

Someone said we have 2 choices everyday LOVE or FEAR, I chose LOVE. If you are holding my 3rd workshop book, I have used the word “LOVE” to talk about Leadership on page 14 – “Leaders Stay in LOVE”.

When you tell your friends and family (and/or me – thank you) that you love us – do you take the extra few seconds to become mindful?

Do you ever take a moment to stop and let that really sink in? LOVE.
