Today Sharing,

I was having my usual Sunday Breakfast @McDonalds with one of my old kakis, he shared with me that lately 2 of his staffs left him within a couple of months. As emotional as I am, I carried this monkey on my shoulders home. All this while, I am still thinking about the issue on why people resign on a good boss like him? 


Many people have shared their views in social media saying that most of the time employees don’t leave the company, they leave the bosses. There might be some truth in it.

So how to overcome this monkey issue?

FSYQualipreneur believes that for every problem under the Sun, there is a solution or none. If there is a solution, please seek till you find it. If there is none, then let it goes. On the Haze problem is there a solution? Yes or Maybe, or No.  The haze will be gone eventually and soon after there will be the sunshine. Just stay cool with your face masks on, never beat yourself over it.

Back to the monkey issue, the first thing you have to realize is that we’re in a very connected world. So, when you have unhappy staff not only will colleagues know  about it, all their friends will know it too—be it through email or mobile phone as they will post it externally onto their social network. So, if your staffs are unhappy and someone says, “Oh, tell me more.” Your staffs are going to say negative things and it’s going to hurt you. One resigned the next follow.

I believe the best thing you want to do is look into your internal personal strength. What are the positives or negatives your staffs say about you? You want to have the ratio obviously more positives than negatives. 

Find a place for your staff to vent means that they won’t say bad things to others and your team members if they get a chance to vent it out. Once they are able to vent, you must control your personal impulsive emotionally. 

I came across one manager who always wants to win over his staffs and always loses his temper now and then. You must keep cool and calm in order to answer your staffs or give them impactful stories. For example, if your company is on cost cutting on training then one of your staff came along and wanted to attend a half-day seminar that costs about $80. Do you still fill up the HR form and submit for approval knowing that it will be rejected on your face? No! If the seminar is valued added, just let him go (never mention the usage of your personal money for the seminar, indirectly you might irritate him thinking he cannot afford it) just treat it as your own department budget and claim under your direct boss’ expenses. Case closed without HR intervention! I believe as a manager and your direct boss, both of you have the certain empowerment to make things happen.  Every rule have loopholes and only 3 percent are abused, 97 percent are broken because someone masters a better rule or with their conscience but never breaks the Law.

Sharing stories is one of the best ways to get to the root of the issues. I have so called black book where I kept all the great things and practices of what my staffs do. Getting on lists of best stories why my staffs like to work with me also built my personal image because I do know that many managers gossip amongst themselves and asked why my staffs never resign on me. The questions inside their heads are “What’s it like to work with FSYQualipreneur? 

The one thing you need to realize is that you can only draw 30 percent of the information from your staffs. The other 70 percent come from some other places like the project your staffs are working on, the famous smoking areas, water cooler, staff canteen, and other places not own or control by you. You can have your staff where they can say all these things that are great, but it’s getting 70 percent of this information from some other places which might cite something (F)uzzy, (S)cary and maybe (Y)ounique.  Caught it before another bomb triggers and explodes in your face.

In today, Millenials world, A good boss’ staff retention power is 5 years. That’s your benchmarking measurement.  After 5 years, if he/she stays on is considered as bonus otherwise let it slides.
