0027 Fall Slip Your tripHappy July! Happy Friday!

Enjoy today and this wonderful weekend

Quick Quotable

Whether we are talking about athletes, artists, academics, or YOU, the story is the same. If you want to fulfill your potential then you must practice a specific skill for a long time with remarkable consistency. Mastery is never an accident.

 Today Topic:

Dependency or Interdependency?

The other day, I injured my leg and the nurse wanted to know whether I need a day-care center for people with disabilities. I was stumped and her question made me think. What?! Is there such a disability center? Who would be eligible? Certainly, people on wheelchairs could be admitted, so could the limping walkers, the blinds, mental illnesses and those who wear hearing aids. Would anyone be left out?

Clearly, it’s not easy to say who is and who isn’t disable or even what it means having a disability. Just look at the words that have gone from crippled to invalid to handicapped to disabled to differently abled to special needs. But, special needs doesn’t work either because those who are on wheelchairs obviously that their needs are special.

So, what is disability? From the dictionary “A disability is a permanent injury, illness, physically or mentally conditions that tend to restrict the way that someone can live their lives.”

But, I preferred Dr. Daniel Gottlieb definition “To have something other people don’t want”.

If you look at someone and think to yourself “I would never want to live like that. No Way!” You have that reaction because the people with disabilities look strange; act strange or worse is having to depend on someone else in their daily needs. Most of us treasure our independence and when we look at someone who has become dependent, our natural reaction is “I would never want to be like that”.

In the business world, the word dependency is a ‘bad’ word thus a new word “interdependent” is created because of our invisible dependency. Whether or not you are disabled right now or on the way joining the ranks, you are now temporarily-abled because with aging inevitably comes the loss of physical and often mental abilities. When you buy your first reading glasses and later some of your memory start to go, you know that you are moving toward a part of your life that you are going to be more dependent.

When I created the habit of putting my reading glasses on and taking them off, whatever I need today that I don’t need yesterday simply becomes part of my life.

So, what’s coming up? As we get older, we have days to think about our successes and losses. Days, we won’t even think of it. Someday, our dependency will seem too much to bear. Other days those drawbacks won’t make much difference. We will be pleased that we are still alive be it dependency or interdependency, these perceptions can change hours to hours. Sounds interesting? When I was discharged from the hospital, the nurse unthinkably said to me “Sometimes, we are dependency and other times we are interdependency.” There is still a funny-bone inside me feeling that way too!

By the way, there are not enough people coming into the workforce to replace the Baby Boomers who will shortly be exiting the workforce in significant numbers.  I left to be a Qualipreneur, some will be Solopreneurs, Uber drivers or free agents. This can be a daunting task and one that not many managers or HR practitioners understand, feel comfortable with or can do well.

Today I want to share one of my favorite Quote:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you.

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have own thoughts.

You house their bodies but not their souls.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dream….Kahlil Gibran – The Prophet.

LOVE 24/7

Someone said we have 2 choices everyday LOVE or FEAR, I chose LOVE. If you are holding my 3rd workshop book, I have used the word “LOVE” to talk about Leadership on page 14 – “Leaders Stay in LOVE”.

When you tell your friends and family (and/or me – thank you) that you love us – do you take the extra few seconds to become mindful?

Do you ever take a moment to stop and let that really sink in? LOVE.

Today I want to share one of my favorite Quote:My father once told me that if you have people who love what you’re doing and people who hate what you’re doing that you’re on the right path.  “Keep going,” he would say.
Today Topic:Trust the Being Safe Process A workplace that forced to do work safely is not being safe at all! There are two ways of managing the production system to Make Money and Love Safety – Just Do it or Being Safe. We have follow Nike and perfected “Just Do It” and complain later. There are many conflicts of interest in today’s workplaces i.e. costs, deliveries, qualities, peoples’ problems and every managers/supervisors egoistic needs of control. We make things happen; but we do not always enjoy Being Safe in our workplaces. Just do it, didn’t take into the consequences of end results. When incident/accident happens, who picks up the cost? Being Safe is building the trust in employees and giving them an environment to manage the consequences of end results – Being Safe. People are the foundation of the production system and trusting them is the fundamental key of building a Make Money and Love Safety Culture. Give your employees the empowerment to describe the system to meet your goals and expectations. Allow them to Being Safe, support their effort, and celebrate safe workdays that they have achieved rather than measuring lagging indicators. The process that makes things happen is the process of Being Safe. Being Safe strategy requires less resources, energy and less supervision. There is more freedom for everyone involved thus generating more fun with better results. Make Money Love Safety equals to Quality Work; Quality Life and employees are enjoying fun in the production system.

Today Topic:When we talk about workplace safety, the most problematic employees are managers/supervisors that won’t accept responsibility for their employees’ unsafe behaviour. We would say 95 percent of all employees can be taught to work safely but if all managers/supervisors don’t change, then there’s nothing much we can do on the unsafe behaviour.
MMLS (Make Money & Love Safety) philosophy is not to make the employees work safely whilst we are around, but to teach the managers/supervisors how to instill the techniques after we are gone. If managers/supervisors don’t get that concept to follow through then their employees’ behavior aren’t going to change for the better.
