Make Money, Love Safety – A Being Safe Process

Can Your Safety Department Team Executes Your Safety Plan?

As 2015 begin, your safety team is probably focused on executing your Safety Strategic Plan.

Successful execution relies on your safety team ability to deploys many programs at once. They will also need to measure safety performances and quickly adjust tactics to meet safety metrics – Leading and Lagging Indicators.

I would like to share a few pointers that will help you to evaluate your safety team’s abilities in executing your Safety Strategic Plan. Firstly, do your safety team understands the safety mission and purposes? Success depends on your team’s understanding of their purposes, objectives and goals. Without a clear vision game plan, team members may engage in non-essential possibly even counter-productive activities. Work through the following LOVE questions:

1. Listen – Are your safety team members listening? I always mentioned that communication is mother of all problems. All these problems started with listening. Your team members should be able to collaborate with their peers and managers. Actively listening and always be concise with clear detailed action items. Mis-communication, vague directives and ambiguous goals need to be addressed immediately.

2. Observe - How complex is your department project cycle? Project cycle length and complexity can dictate the performances of a particular operational structure. Is the department strategy aligning with operational strategy? One misalignment effort can spill over into the other teams crippling the entire organization’s effectiveness like dominoes.

3. Verbalize – Do you have a Safety Department Team Charter? The charter outlines the team’s purposes, objectives and goals. Use the charter to jumpstarts conversation about roles, tactics and challenges. Does your Safety Department Structure Support Your Own Vision? You need to verbalize your personal safety vision that makes sense on your safety structure and system. Otherwise, your team will get stuck and misaligned in-fighting instead of executing the plan.

4. Engage - What are your customers’ needs and also not forgetting your own employees’ specific needs? Focusing on customers’ and employees’ needs are Safety 101. Your department structure will need to adapt to these needs. For example, maybe one of your regional operation units works best with customers requiring in-safety personnel contact. On the other hand, complex safe specifications require a subject-matter-expert focus team.

I find that setting 100 days performances milestones throughout the year will capture early execution issues. In fact, if every safety team members have a work matrix and discussion on every 100 days; you might not even need to struggle through your Annual Appraisal System. Work with your team to schedule these 100 days milestones clearly identifying the success metrics.
